Laura Pohl is the New York Times best-selling author of The Grimrose Girls. Her debut novel, The Last 8, won the International Latino Book Awards. She likes writing messages in caps lock, never using autocorrect, and obsessing about Star Wars. When not taking pictures of her dog, she can be found curled up with a fantasy or science-fiction book or replaying Dragon Age. Her favorite Disney princess is Cinderella, and her favorite Disney prince is Kylo Ren. A Brazilian at heart and soul, she makes her home in São Paulo.
I was born in Braunschweig, Germany to Brazilian parents who love to travel. I lived most of my life in Curitiba, but when I was 13, I moved to the other side of the world to live in Sydney, Australia. That’s where I first started learning English, and I devoured every single book in the middle-grade and young-adult section of the Marrickville Library.
After spending one year in Sydney, I moved back to Curitiba to finish high school. That’s where I first started writing, and spent some of my days writing Naruto and Percy Jackson fanfiction, and decided I wanted to become an author. At 18, I moved (again) to São Paulo, where I went to major in Literature in the University of São Paulo. I now work as a freelance editor and translator of portuguese-english for major Brazilian publishers, and have translated beloved books such as Gideon the Ninth, If We Were Villains, Fourth Wing, The Hurricane Wars and Murderbot.
My first published book was THE LAST 8, with Sourcebooks Fire, which tells the story of a wanna-be pilot who survives the alien invasion and learns how to fight back. It won the International Latino Awards for Best YA novel in English. The sequel, THE FIRST 7, came out the following year. THE GRIMROSE GIRLS, my first fantasy novel, was a featured Barnes&Noble Monthly pick and also a New York Times Bestseller.
I love reading, playing videogames, fangirling about Star Wars and writing pretty much all of my messages in caps lock. Like Garfield, I hate Mondays and love lasagna. I’m also a big fan of dachshunds.
